বাংলাদেশের অস্থায় কোনো আকস্মিক ঘটনা নয়। দিন থেকে অনেক উন্থানপতনের মধ্য দিতো এটি স্বাধীন হয়। প্রাচীন কাল থেকেই বাংলায় চারটি প্রধান ইউনিট ছিল। এর মধ্যে গৌড় ও সঙ্গ কখনো কখনো আত্বপূর্ণ ছিল। সুপ্রাচীন কাল থেকে ইতিহাসের ধারাবাহিকতায় কখনো বহু গঙ্গারিডাই, পুত্র, গৌড় ও বাস্য দেশের পাওয়া যায়। 'বীরে ধীরে বাঙ্গালা নাম ধারণ করে এবং পরবর্তীতে যোঙ্গলে রূপান্তরিত হয়।

বাংলা নামের উৎপত্তি বাংলা নামের উৎপরিতে অনেকগুলো উৎনের অবতারণা করা হয়। ঐতিহাসিকদের মাঝে মতপার্থক্য রয়েছে। নিচে সে সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করা হলো।

 পৌরাণিক কাহিনি: 

প্রাচীনকালের ধর্মীয় প্রথার পুরালে বলা হয় অন্তমুনির গর্ভে ৫ মধ্যে একজনের নাম ছিল 'বঙ্গ'। তিনি পরাক্রমশালী রাজা ছিলেন। তাঁর এবং তাঁর বংশধরদের থেকে পরবর্তীতে 'বঙ্গ'নামের উৎপত্তি হয়। পরিমার্জিত হয়ে বিভিন্ন সংযোজনের মাধ্যমে এটা বাংলা নাম ধারণ করে। বিয়াজ-উস-সালাতীন এ বলা হয়, হযরত নূহ (আ) এর এক বংশধর ছিল। তার নাম ছিল "বঙ্গ"। তার নাম থেকেই বাস নামের উৎপত্তি। এ সবল উৎস থেকে বলা যায় প্রাচীন কালে হয়ত এমন কোনো পরাক্রমশালী রাজা ছিল যার নামানুসারে বঙ্গ নামের উৎপত্তি হয়।

চীনা ও তিব্বতি শব্দের মিল 'শদকে অনেকে চীনা ও ডিব্বতি শব্দ বলে উল্লেখ করেন। বঙ্গের 'অং' অংশের সাথে 'গঙ্গা' হোয়াংহো, ইয়াংসিকিয়াং ইত্যাদি নদীর নামের সাথে মিল রয়েছে। বাংলায় যেহেতু অনেক জলাশয়েরও নাম রয়েছে তাই একে বল বলা হয়।

সুকুমার সেনো মতে, বঙ্গের আর একটা অর্থ হলো 'কার্পাস তুলা'। প্রাচীন কালের গ্রিক-রোমান ব্যবসায়ীরা এ অঞ্চলের সুতার প্রশংসা করেছেন। 'পেরিপ্লাস অন না ইরিথ্রিয়ান সি', 'ইন্ডিশ" ইত্যাদি গ্রন্থে এ সম্পর্কে তথ্য রয়েছে।

কৌটিল্যের অর্থশাস্ত্র : 

খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব চতুর্থ শতকের কৌটিল্যের অর্থশাস্ত্রে বঙ্গের "শ্বেত স্লিখ' মুক্তি বস্ত্রের নাম বলাহয়েছে। এটা সুকুমার সেনের মতকে সমর্থন করে। সুকুমার সেনের মতে, অনেক তুলা উৎপাদন হতো বিধায় এ অঞ্চলেরনাম 'বঙ্গ' হয়েছে।

আবুল ফাল : 

মুঘল আমলে এ ভূভাগ সুবা বাঙ্গালা' নামে পরিচিত ছিল। আবুল ফজল 'বাঙ্গালা নামের ব্যাখ্যায় তার হাছে বলেন, বাগালার আনি নাম ছিল বঙ্গ। প্রাচীন কালে এখানে জলাবদ্ধ হতো বলে এর বাজার ১০ উঁচু ২০ বিস্তৃত প্রকাতে 'আল' নির্মাণ করতো। বঙ্গের সাথে 'আল' যুক্ত হয়ে বাঙ্গাল' বা 'বাঙ্গালা' নামের উৎপত্তি হয়েছে বলে আবুল ফজল মনে করেন।

রমেশচন্দ্র মজুমদারের মতামত: 

রমেশচন্দ্র মজুমদার বলেন, প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই 'বঙ্গ' ও 'বাঙ্গাল" দুটি পৃথক দেশ ছিল। বাগাল দেশের নাম হতেই কালক্রমে সমগ্র দেশের নাম বাংলা নামকরণ করা হয়। বর্তমান কালে বাংলাদেশের অধিবাসীদের যে 'বাঙ্গাল' বলা হয় তা সেই প্রাচীন "বাঙ্গাল" দেশের স্মৃতি বহন করে।

আব্দুল মমিন চৌধুরীর মতামত:

অধ্যাপক আব্দুল মমিন চৌধুরী বলেন, বাংলার প্রাচীন জনপদের মধ্যে 'বাঙ্গাল' কখনো 'বঙ্গের তুলনায় খ্যাতিমান ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল না। তাঁর মতে, বঙ্গের মধ্যে দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব বাংলায় অনেক জনপদ অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল। তিনি বলেন, বাজাল বঙ্গের সমুদ্রতীরবর্তী দক্ষিণ ভাগ ছিল। এসবের ভিত্তিতে নদীমাতৃক বৃষ্টি বহুল এ বাংলায় 'আল' নির্মাণ করায় বঙ্গ থেকেই বাংলা নামের উৎপত্তি হয়েছে বলে তিনি সীহাররঞ্জন রায় ও আব্দুল মমিন চৌধুরী এ ব্যাখ্যা গ্রহণ করেন।

মুগল পূর্ব যুগে মিনহাজ-ই-সিরাজ মুসলমানদের বাংলা বিয়ের সময় 'বাঙলা' নামের উল্লেখ করেননি। তিনি বরেন্দ্র, রাঢ় ও বঙ্গ নামে বাংলার বিভিন্ন অঞ্চল চিহ্নিত করেন। মিনহাজ পরবর্তী ঐতিহাসিক জিয়াউদ্দিন বারানী 'বাংলা' নামের উল্লেখ করেন।
